Highland Book Prize 2023 Award Ceremony - Cancelled - see below

Date/Time
Date(s) - Tue 3rd Sep, 2024
7:30pm - 9:00pm

PLEASE NOTE: Due to unavoidable circumstances, the Award Ceremony has now been cancelled. The Winner of the 2023 Highland Book Prize will be announced on the Highland Book Prize website on Wednesday 4th September. More information is available below.

Nairn Book and Arts Festival was to have hosted the Highland Society of London and Moniack Mhor for the Highland Book Prize awards ceremony on the eve of this year’s literary programme. The prize is organised by Moniack Mhor and sponsored by the Highland Society. Unfortunately, due to unavoidable circumstances we have had to take the decision to cancel the live event in Nairn this year.  The winner for the 2023 Highland Book Prize will be announced on Wednesday 4th September on the Highland Book Prize website.

The good news is, that we have arranged for an enhanced author talk that same evening, with Highland Book Prize shortlisted author James Macdonald Lockhart to be interviewed by poet Peter Mackay, with music by clarsach player Cheyenne Brown, and you can book a ticket to view online below, or to attend live via Nairn’s website here.

We apologise again for this sadly unavoidable change in our published programme.  Moniack Mhor will still live stream the shortlist event with James Macdonald Lockhart, which promises to be a magical evening of music and discussion on birdsong.

James Macdonald Lockhart is the author of two books about birds, Raptor (2016), which received the Royal Society of Literature Jerwood Award for Non-Fiction, and Wild Air (2023).

“Wild Air puts me behind a pair of binoculars! The fine, precise prose keeps each bird right there and visible on the page, while the surrounding natural world feels real and tangible. Some of the scenes JML presents are absolutely unforgettable.” Judge – Cynan Jones

Alaskan-born Cheyenne Brown has been based in Scotland for over half her life where she performs and teaches the Scottish harp. Her playing style is characteristically free and creative, making much use of improvisation, basslines and contrasting textures.

She is now based in the Highlands, where she enjoys using the scenery and history as inspiration for her arrangements and compositions.

Please note, you are booking a ticket to the online live stream only.  If you would like to book to attend the in-person event please visit Nairn Book & Arts Festival here.

The Highland Book Prize is presented by the Highland Society of London and facilitated by Moniack Mhor, Scotland’s Creative Writing Centre.  Funding for public engagement is generously provided by William Grant Foundation.
