11:00am - 1:00pm

Whether you’re new to writing, polishing your umpteenth draft, or simply want to try a taster of a different style, form, or genre, we’re confident you’ll enjoy and be inspired by these focused shorter masterclass and workshop sessions. All hosted by Moniack Mhor on Zoom Pro, usually with an opportunity to ask questions too. More of these to come during 2025 – we’ll keep you posted! Meanwhile, enjoy …

Making every word count

The focus of this 2-hour masterclass with the Guardian’s Paul Fleckney will be nature writing, but the principles of how you approach, edit and finalise a short piece of non-fiction will apply whatever the topic.

We’ll take a look at two ‘Country Diary’ pieces from The Guardian, comparing the original copy and discussing how it might be improved. Paul will also take you through the changes he made or requested from the writer, then he’ll compare the “before” text with the “after” – the finished product. Finally, at the end of each half of the class, we’ll have a Q&A on any remaining queries you might have.

Tutor

Paul Fleckney: I’ve been at the Guardian for 15 years, mainly on the Opinion desk working on articles by columnists such as Polly Toynbee, Marina Hyde and Jonathan Freedland. I’m also editor of The Guardian’s Country Diary column, a daily short piece on British nature and countryside matters. This also led me to compiling/editing a “best of” book of Country Diary columns, called Under the Changing Skies, published by Faber in September 2024.
