A course exploring Norse and Celtic myth, with a sprinkling of Arthurian legend, and the ways of weaving them into modern tales, novels and poems.

Tutors

Kevin Crossley-Holland has won the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize, and he is a well-known poet and translator. His Arthur trilogy was translated into 25 languages, and he is the author of The Penguin Book of Norse Myths. He has retold British folktales in Between Worlds, translated Beowulf from Anglo-Saxon, collaborated with many leading composers and artists, and lives in North Norfolk. His final historical novel, Kata and Tor, and his Collected Poems will both be published in Spring 2025.

Catherine Fisher is a poet and novelist for children and young people. She has published five collections of poetry, the most recent being The Bramble King (Seren Books) Her work has been widely anthologised. She has written over 40 novels for young people, often using myth and legend, including Incarceron, a New York Times bestseller and Times Book of the Year, and her work has been translated into many languages. She has been shortlisted for the Carnegie, Blue Peter, Smarties Book Prize and Costa Awards and has twice won the Welsh Books Council Tir na n’og Prize, most recently with The Clockwork Crow. Her latest work is a re-telling of the Mabinogi story, Culhwch and Olwen. She was the inaugural Young People’s Laureate for Wales.

Guest Reader

Dimitra Fimi is Professor of Fantasy and Children’s Literature and Co-Director of the Centre for Fantasy and the Fantastic at the University of Glasgow. Both her monographs (Tolkien, Race and Cultural History, 2008; Celtic Myth in Contemporary Children’s Fantasy, 2017) won Mythopoeic Scholarship Awards, and she won the 2021 Outstanding Contribution to Tolkien Studies award (Tolkien Society). She has published extensively on J. R. R. Tolkien, fantasy literature more widely, including children’s literature, myth and legend in literature, and invented languages. She co-edits the Perspectives on Fantasy book series (Bloomsbury), with Brian Attebery and Matthew Sangster.

Fees

The full fee for this course is £725. This includes your accommodation in a single room with shared bathroom, all meals, hot drinks and snacks from Monday afternoon until Saturday morning, and your tuition. A limited number of en-suite rooms are available, which can be booked in advance for a £50 surcharge. We will also reserve an en-suite room for anyone who may need it due to a medical condition. This will be offered out as an upgrade nearer the course start date if it is not needed.

A limited number of Twin Room places are available at a discounted price of £675 per person. When booking a Twin Room place, please tell us in the comments box which gender you are and which gender(s) you are comfortable sharing a room with. This information will remain confidential.

A small single room with a skylight is available at a discounted price of £700. Please note this room does not have an ordinary window, only a small skylight.

A deposit is required to secure your place, which is non-refundable after a 14-day cooling-off period. The balance payment of £475 is due six weeks before the course begins.
