Writing From Life
Drawing on a range of examples, we’ll explore ways to write freely and imaginatively about your own experience and other people’s, keeping in mind the demands of structure and narrative, as well as the ethical challenges posed by writing non-fiction.
Tutors
Adam Farrer is a writer and editor based in Manchester. He has performed at literature events and festivals across the UK including Manchester Literature Festival, Edinburgh International Book Festival and the Ilkley Literature Festival. His writing has featured in numerous publications, including The Guardian, Lunate, Hinterland and Test Signal (Bloomsbury/Dead Ink, 2021), and his first book, Cold Fish Soup (Saraband, 2022), a memoir in essays about the Yorkshire coast, won the NorthBound Book Award at the 2021 Northern Writers’ Awards. He edits the creative non-fiction journal The Real Story and has lectured in memoir and life writing at the University of Lancaster.
Miranda France is the author of five books, as well as a translator from Spanish and a consultant editor at the Times Literary Supplement. Her memoir The Writing School (2023), which considers events following a family tragedy in the context of a writing course, also doubles as a guide to researching and shaping creative non fiction. Miranda’s writing has been praised for its warmth and humour as well as its originality and eloquence. An experienced teacher, she is currently a guest tutor on Goldsmiths Creative Writing M.A. and writes regularly for the TLS and Prospect, among other publications.
Guest Reader
Alice Jolly has won the Pen Ackerley Prize and the V.S.Pritchett Memorial Prize. She was runner up for the Rathbones Folio Prize in 2019 and won an O.Henry Award in 2021. Her new novel The Matchbox Girl will be published by Bloomsbury in spring 2025.
Fees
The full fee for this course is £725. This includes your accommodation in a single room with shared bathroom, all meals, hot drinks and snacks from Monday afternoon until Saturday morning, and your tuition. A limited number of en-suite rooms are available, which can be booked in advance for a £50 surcharge. We will also reserve an en-suite room for anyone who may need it due to a medical condition. This will be offered out as an upgrade nearer the course start date if it is not needed.
A limited number of Twin Room places are available at a discounted price of £675 per person. When booking a Twin Room place, please tell us in the comments box which gender you are and which gender(s) you are comfortable sharing a room with. This information will remain confidential.
A small single room with a skylight is available at a discounted price of £700. Please note this room does not have an ordinary window, only a small skylight.
A deposit is required to secure your place, which is non-refundable after a 14-day cooling-off period. The balance payment of £575 is due six weeks before the course begins. Access
Please let us know in your booking form if you have any access requirements, for example a ground floor bedroom and / or access to a step-free accessible shower room.
