Join us at Moniack Mhor for an evening of North African and Middle Eastern poetry, with Soukaina Habiballah, Mouna Ouafik, and Sawsan Al Areeqe.

Highlight Arts and Moniack Mhor are delighted to invite you to enjoy this rare opportunity to sit by the fire in our Strawbale Studio and hear the work of SHAEIRAT alongside Highland music.  شاعرات / shaeirat = poetesses, and is a collective art project seeking to produce and stage Arab poetry performances by poetesses and poets themselves in the Arab world and globally.

This evening of poetry readings from award-winning Moroccan poets is part of a Scottish tour that aims to give voice to marginalised female writers from the Middle East and North Africa. 

 

Soukaina Habiballah is a Moroccan poetess and novelist. She has authored four collections of poetry – A Quarter Century of Sight, There is No Need for You, Five Wingless Butterflies, and Plan B –  a novel, and a collection of short stories, The Barracks and Maybe Tomorrow. Her poems have been translated into French, English, German and Spanish.

 

 

Mouna Ouafik is a Moroccan poet and writer. currently completing an autobiographical collection. She has published three collections of poetry – Brown Vanilla, Red Neon, Sharp edge of a half-broken plate – and two collections of short stories: Mint, wax and death and Lo3ab.com. She is currently completing a vast autobiographical collection entitled From the Female Chimpanzee to Darwin.

 

 

Glasgow-based Yemeni filmmaker and poet, Sawsan Al Areeqe, will also be joining them on the tour and developing a film in response to their work. She has published four poetry collections: More Than Necessary, The Square of Pain, What if My Blood Turned Into Chocolate, and Expired Death, which was written during her Fellowship at the University of Glasgow, and she has recently finished working on her fifth collection.
